Rachel King is well practiced in capturing the nuances of everyday life. Her images reflect a moment of animation or contemplation, often caught during candid conversation with her subject or model. Rachel cites her fascination with people’s behaviour, personal relationships and the empowerment of natural surroundings as a driving force to her work.
Mainly self-taught Rachel prefers to work with natural or available light, as such, not imposing too much technology or crew on her subjects. Her portraits and lifestyle shoots are intimate, unassuming and gentle - cultural icons including Jon Hopkins, Kate Mosse, Jake and Dinos Chapman, Jeremy Paxman, David Blakeley, Gerald Scarfe, Ellie Goulding and Jamal Edwards have all sat for her.
Although Rachel shoots digitally for commercial clients she prefers to shoot on 35mm or medium format film for her personal work and projects. “There is a richness in colour and clarity to film which simply cannot be created, the unexpected results are always the best.”
Rachel sees the moments in between; the laughter before the pose, the sadness in a private anecdote. For personal and commercial clients alike, she shoots authentically - bringing herself and her relationship with her subject and their character to the frame.
